A business owned by UnitedHealth Group Inc. is currently dealing with a cyberattack that has caused disruptions in some operations. The company suspects that a “nation-state-associated cybersecurity threat actor” has gained access to certain information-technology systems operated by its Change Healthcare unit.
Restoration Efforts in Progress
UnitedHealth is actively working to restore these affected systems and return to normal operations as quickly as possible. The duration and extent of the disruption are currently unknown. The company has isolated the impacted systems to protect partners and patients while containing, assessing, and addressing the incident.
Limited Impact on Other Systems
The cyberattack seems to be contained within Change Healthcare’s network, with other systems across the company operating normally. Although there is uncertainty about the financial impact at this time, shares experienced a slight decline in after-hours trading despite a previous increase in regular trading.
Recent Similar Hacks
While UnitedHealth did not disclose the nation-state actor responsible in its filing, recent incidents involving other companies point to similar state-sponsored cyberattacks. Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Microsoft Corporation both reported breaches by suspected state-sponsored actors, underlining the increasing threat posed by cyberattacks.
