A federal judge has recently dismissed the lawsuit filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump against CNN. In his lawsuit, Trump had alleged that referring to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election as “the Big Lie” was equivalent to comparing him to Adolf Hitler. However, U.S. District Judge Raag Singhal, who was appointed by Trump himself, ruled in favor of CNN and stated that the references made by the network’s hosts were opinions and not factual statements.
Trump had sought punitive damages amounting to $475 million in his lawsuit, claiming that these references had damaged his reputation and political career. However, Judge Singhal’s ruling highlighted that these claims lacked merit.
While Trump’s attorneys declined to comment on the ruling, CNN, under the umbrella of Warner Bros. Discovery, also chose not to provide any statements regarding the matter. This dismissal marks a significant development in Trump’s ongoing legal battles as he continues his pursuit of the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, making it his third run for the presidency as a major-party candidate.
