Former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, said to be a frontrunner for the Prime Minister position in the upcoming election, is calling for several trillions of yen to be unleashed as economic stimulus.
- Kishida wants the stimulus released as soon as possible, as reported on Nikkei.
- The stimulus will cover provisions for all the economic sectors and regions in need of assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Kishida said he will run against Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to lead the Liberal Democratic Party.
- The ruling party has virtually secured the prime minister position given its majority in the lower house. The general election is set for November 28.
